In goldsmithing, filigree refers to light and delicate works that imitate arabesques, composed of very thin gold or silver threads, presenting an infinite variety of objects in various shapes.
In Italy, it was already present in Etruscan goldsmithing, with stunning granular works. In Imperial Roman goldsmithing, we find the first jewels made exclusively with openwork filigree, excluding the base sheet. Barbarian civilizations and Byzantine taste produced new masterpieces; around 1200, with the return of the Crusaders, filigree arrived in Genoa and Venice (opus veneticum).
