The story of the bishop’s rings
The bishop’s ring has a rather interesting history that is preserved today.
Traditionally, the ring was part of the Catholic bishop’s attire and was made of gold or silver with an amethyst stone on top. The ring represented the bishop’s relationship with God. It signified his “marriage” and devotion to the church. The bishop’s ring was traditionally engraved with a cross on the side and a diocesan seal on the top. Bishops used the rings to create wax seals on official documents. The practice of kissing the bishop’s ring as a sign of respect for his authority is something that is still done in the church today. These rings were typically very large and heavy to stand out as a sign of religious authority and power. Very often amethyst was used which is a stone associated with tranquility and spirituality.
