It was considered a luxury in ancient Egypt, the Near East, and Rome, where it was the main ingredient of nardinium perfumes.  It is mentioned in the Gospel.  Mary of Bethany, Lazarus’s sister, made use of it, so much so that on one occasion, during a meal in Bethany, she used an extraordinary amount of it, to anoint Jesus’ feet and dry them with her own hair.
